This Women’s History Month, the Chicago-based CPASS Foundation is celebrating a historic milestone with the appointment of Dr. Coretta C. Patterson to its Board of Directors — marking a powerful moment of Black women’s leadership in STEM and education.
Dr. Patterson, a nationally-recognized veterinary leader and Founding Dean at Midwestern University, becomes the first veterinarian and veterinary medical school dean to serve on the CPASS board. A proud South Side Chicago native and former participant in CPASS’s predecessor program, her journey reflects the very mission of the organization: creating pathways where few existed before.
A former president of the National Association for Black Veterinarians, Dr. Patterson has long championed diversity in veterinary medicine and continues to open doors for the next generation.
Her appointment this March is more than symbolic — it’s history in motion, highlighting the impact of Black women leading, building, and transforming the future of health and science.
“It’s exciting, especially to be from Chicago and to be a part of this,” said Dr. Patterson. “As a board member at CPASS, I hope to serve as a bridge between my university and the organization and to broaden access to opportunity for students from all backgrounds, particularly those from communities that have historically been under-resourced.”
