Video Games May Be a Gateway for Teenage Gambling: Here’s What You Need to Know

For many years, there was debate about whether playing video games regularly could change someone’s behavior. According to recent studies, one issue that parents and guardians should look out for is online gambling. These studies show that more than a third of teenage boys are gambling, and the likely gateway is their video games. This is what you need to know about it.

What the Study Revealed

This new study strongly suggested that there was a link between the high rate of teen gambling and playing certain popular video games. These video games were more likely to have a gambling-related style than traditional video games. When surveying 1,000 boys between the ages of 11 and 17, the assessors found that they were more likely to be lured into online gambling by video games than by online platforms that offer gambling, such as sports betting or casinos.

According to the survey, 36 percent of the participants reported gambling within the last year. When they broke the numbers down by age, the percentage increased with age. For example, only 32 percent of 11-year-olds gamble online, while 51 percent of the 16-year-olds admit to gambling. For those who gambled in the last year, 64 percent of them noted that they also participated in online gaming-related gambling.

Another unexpected issue that arose from the survey was the frequency with which teens were shown online gambling ads or posts on social media. Many of the teens who were gambling stated that they received an increasing number of ads the more they played video games.

How Video Games Lead to Gambling

The main way that video games may encourage gambling is through the inclusion of gambling-like features. These are often known as loot boxes that usually contain rewards that are designed to enhance a player’s experience in the game. Depending on the game, you may use tokens that were earned, or you may have to pay real money to reap the rewards. Many games also include the ability to buy tokens when you run out.

Experts say that this kind of gambling-like feature gives teens a taste of the risk and reward that comes with gambling. When they win, they often get the same rush of dopamine that gamblers experience. Although they may be able to keep getting the same feeling in the video game, it opens the door for them to try real gambling to get a better high and potentially better rewards.

These video games may seem harmless, but experts want parents and guardians to take note of this survey. Many games have gambling-like features, as they encourage players to stick around, so the odds of your teen not playing a game with them are low.

How Gambling Can Affect Teens

It’s important to note that not everyone who gambles will develop an addiction to it. However, studies show that online gambling is linked to an increased risk of developing a problem. Researchers found this problem to be most prevalent among young people between the ages of 10 and 25. To make things worse, you’re more likely to develop a gambling addiction if you start doing it at a younger age. Experts suggest that this may be because their brains are still developing.

Additionally, teens tend to be more impulsive while seeking experiences that give them a rush. Even then, they’re usually convinced that they have things under control. This kind of mindset can make them more susceptible to the dopamine rush that comes from gambling and losing track of how often they’re doing it. As they chase the same sensations, excessive gambling can lead to addiction.

Unfortunately, the financial, academic, and social strain that can come from gambling can also result in your teen being stressed, embarrassed, anxious, and depressed. These feelings are especially concerning given that studies show people with a gambling disorder are more likely to die by suicide than those with other addictive disorders.

What Parents Can Do About It

The first place to start is to note if there have been any changes in your teen. Becoming preoccupied with a new sport may be a sign that they’ve started to bet on games. This preoccupation may mean that they aren’t taking care of themselves as well as they used to. Their academics may start to suffer as well.

When they’re gambling, they may start withdrawing from their social relationships. This can happen because your teen is spending more time gambling or because they feel ashamed of how their disorder has affected their life.

Finally, you may notice that money goes missing. Sometimes, this will be money around the house or their savings. Depending on the platform they’re using, you may see strange charges on your credit card. If you give your teen an allowance, they may ask for more or ask about doing extra chores to earn more money.

While you can explore placing limits on how much money your teen can spend when playing their video games, experts recommend talking to them about online games and gambling. You can bring up gambling and the link to gaming when you see an interesting ad or simply when they’ve taken a break from playing. Since gambling can affect their lives as significantly as drugs and sex, including it in those talks can underscore the importance.

When talking, it’s important to let your teen know that you’re not judging how or what they play. You need them to know that you’re only interested in their welfare. Instead of making any assumptions, it’s recommended that you ask questions to get to know their situation better. Whether or not they admit to gambling, you should remain calm and underscore why it’s good to stay away from gambling.

One thing you should point out is that social media isn’t likely to show the reality of online gambling. Influencers and celebrities who promote gambling are often playing with someone else’s money, and that’s not what most people experience. Gambling can result in losing significant amounts of money and affect your relationships. Some people with gambling addictions even run into trouble with the law if they steal from their jobs, family, or close friends. If you have any personal experiences with gambling, then it can keep their attention on reality.

Of course, you don’t have to approach the situation on your own–especially if you strongly suspect that your teen is already addicted to gambling. You should reach out to therapists who specialize in addiction in teens. Even if you’re not sure about an addiction, it can help to have your teen talk to professionals who can give them a better picture of how gambling can affect teens. They may offer helpful advice on how teens can manage their gaming so it doesn’t encourage a gambling habit.

Millions of Americans play video games, but they don’t have the same effect on everyone. Recent studies show that teen boys who play video games have a higher risk of getting into online gambling. Your best bet is to talk to your teen about the dangers of gambling and get a professional involved when needed.
