For many Black families in Los Angeles, staying healthy involves more than simply scheduling a doctor’s appointment. Long-standing barriers—including limited access to affordable healthcare, lack of insurance coverage, transportation challenges, and historical distrust of the medical system—can make it difficult to receive preventive care and early screenings.
Yet early detection remains one of the most powerful tools for preventing serious illness. Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and high cholesterol disproportionately affect Black Americans, often developing without noticeable symptoms until complications arise. Regular screenings can help identify these conditions early, when they are often easier to manage and treat.
Through 49 community initiatives and working alongside more than 200 community partners, Cedars-Sinai is dedicated to improving the health of people in Los Angeles and ensuring access to care and resources.
Join Cedars-Sinai this summer at their community events! They’ll be sharing information about their community programs, health resources, and offering free screenings.

Many chronic diseases are considered “silent” because they may not cause symptoms in their early stages. High blood pressure, for example, is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease, yet many people do not realize they have it until serious health problems occur.
Free community screenings for blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol can help individuals better understand their health and take action before complications develop. These services are especially important in communities where healthcare access has historically been limited.
Improving health outcomes in the Black community requires more than medical care alone. Access to healthy food, safe places to exercise, educational opportunities, social support, and preventive services all contribute to long-term well-being.
Whether you want to learn about managing chronic conditions, access free screenings, support a loved one, or explore a healthcare career, community-based programs offer a valuable starting point. Small steps, such as checking your blood pressure, attending a wellness event, or connecting with local resources, can significantly improve your health and that of future generations.
