coping with homesickness

A lot of our first time being away from home is transitioning to college. Throughout our high school years, we all strive towards going away for college. Until the very moment we go and realize we miss home. It can be hard coping with homesickness.

We go through this phase of homesickness. You go through this phase of displacement. You go through a stage of missing the way things used to be. The comfort of high school. The guidance you had.

Being homesick is normal. We all will experience it once in our college days and even for the years to come.

In this article, I will give you 5 different coping mechanisms to ease the transition.

Accepting Being Homesick

Missing home is normal. Experiencing saddened emotions when you’re told to be happy is normal.

To get over these feelings, you need to embrace them. Don’t run away or even feel bad about it. Allow yourself some time to be in this state.

Hiding from the truth isn’t going to make anything better but make it worse.

Talking To Your Loved Ones Back At Home

Often, people deal with being homesick because they can’t talk to everyone as they once did. Schedules, distance, and more could play a factor in this.

A way to combat this issue is setting a time up at least once a week to connect with those at home. You could use one hour to talk on the phone or through text messages about things that put your mind at ease.

You would instantly feel connected and supported by the ones you love.

Exploring Your New Environment Helps Coping With Homesickness

Homesickness kicks in because you’re out of place. This is not your normal life. So becoming familiar with your environment could help it become your new normal.

Take some time out of your day to explore campus, meet new people, and do new activities. You will occupy your mind to focus on the good things that come with your campus.

Finding A Positive Outlet For Your Emotions To Cope With Homesickness

Homesickness is a normal emotion. You should find a way to let out these feelings to feel better. It’s ok to be homesick, but it’s not ok to drown in it.

  • Venting to your loved ones
  • Expressing yourself through poetry
  • Reaching out to school counseling

These are all positive ways to embrace and let feelings flow away.

Having Things That Remind You Of Home Help Coping With Homesickness

Being homesick is the basic feeling of feeling uncomfortable. Your new environment isn’t “home” for you. So let’s make it home for you.

Bringing items, foods, and scents you associate with home could make you feel better. It brings the comfort of home to your environment.

If your mom sprays the house with lemon scents, and you take the initiative to do the same in your dorm, you’ll be more at ease.
