Comedian Thomas Miles, better known as the nephew of Steve Harvey and the host of the hit dating show, Ready to Love, recently shared the news that he was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The prank call comedian took some time off from being a radio personality and touring to undergo treatment. But the good news is, Nephew Tommy’s concer has since been completely removed and he’s on the road to recovery. The 55-year-old thanked his wife, Jacqueline Miles, for having his back throughout the ordeal.

“Thank you to my wife for her support. I am truly blessed 🙏🏾,” he said in a caption accompanied by a photo of him in a hospital bed with his Jacqueline by his side. “May 18th, 2022 I got the call that I had been diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. August 24, 2022 surgery was performed. ALL CANCER IS 100% GONE. No chemotherapy necessary.”

Jacquline and Thomas have been married since 2016 but met in 1986. They share two sons and a daughter together – Thomas Wesley Miles III, Sydnei Miles, and Jhordyn Miles.

Thyroid cancer is a growth of cells that starts in the thyroid. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck, just below the Adam’s apple. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.

Thyroid cancer might not cause any symptoms at first. But as it grows, it can cause signs and symptoms, such as swelling in your neck, voice changes and difficulty swallowing.

Several types of thyroid cancer exist. Most types grow slowly, though some types can be very aggressive. Most thyroid cancers can be cured with treatment.

Actor and activist Hill Harper also suffered from thyroid cancer.

He said that one day he woke up, he couldn’t swallow.

Facing a complete removal of his thyroid gland, Hill’s worries turned from the cancer itself to the possible complications from surgery. He knew that one tiny slip of the scalpel, damaging the nearby nerves of the vocal chords, could leave him hoarse. Or worse, without a voice. The future of his acting career hung in the balance.

Rather than passing off his sore throat as nothing more than a cold, Hill followed his intuition.

In July 2010, Hill’s surgeon at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, successfully removed his thyroid gland, including three cancerous nodes. Though he had trouble speaking for a few weeks after surgery, his doctors assured him his voice would return to normal and it did.

“It’s a blessing,” Hill says with relief.

Thyroid Cancer Symptoms

Not everyone has those same symptoms as Harper. Most thyroid cancers don’t cause any signs or symptoms early in the disease. As thyroid cancer grows, it may cause:

  • A lump (nodule) that can be felt through the skin on your neck
  • A feeling that…close-fitting shirt collars are becoming too tight
  • Changes to your voice, including increasing hoarseness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Swollen lymph nodes in your neck
  • Pain in your neck and throat

When to see a doctor

If you experience any signs or symptoms that worry you, make an appointment with your health care provider.

“GOD IS IN THE BLESSING BUSINESS. My voice is slowly coming back around. Get ready…I will grab that Mic once again. 🎤 If I can be an example for anyone. Stay on top of your health. Get check ups on a regular basis. It helps to already know God…it helps to already have a relationship with God. That way when you call on him…HE KNOWS EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE🙏🏽”
