Navigating The Dining Hall: Making Healthy Food Choices On Campus

Have you ever dealt with going to the cafe or the dining hall with your friends and can’t decide what to pick between the many options, or if you even should get them? Being a college student these days can take a toll on your health, especially if you do not properly treat your body with the correct nutrients. Most students only survive off of ramen, which isn’t healthy at all, but for those who can go to the dining hall, we are here to help. Here are some tips on what to do when dining on your school’s campus to help you improve your overall health and to help you make smarter and healthier food choices from now on.

Nourishing Meal Routine

The first tip is to make up a meal routine if possible. This first tip should be used not only for anybody in an extracurricular but for everyone in the school to ensure your body is always alert and healthy. Many students have a perfect routine for class or study, but it is also important to make a meal routine. This will help to improve your body in many ways; one of those ways is to keep you focused and energized in class. Not getting enough energy in before class can cause you to be less alert and have a foggy mind that’ll keep you from zoning in on the lecture.

This generation may be unable to keep a steady routine by themselves without help, so there are many ways to keep up with your routine. Making a planner, whether it be electronically or by paper and pen, could be a lot of help. Most people can follow things if they are written down; making plans with a peer will allow you to keep your health in check and help a friend out. A simple grab-and-go snack or prep meal could do a lot of good. Most colleges offer containers for a to-go meal, but if yours does not, you can always bring your own container to make your prep meal or to-go meal yourself.

Moderating Sugar Intake

The second tip is to consume sugar in moderation. This is a big problem for most people. We get stuck consuming many things with a high sugar content in them rapidly. This is bad for you and leads us to consume so much that our sugar is spiked to the max. Then, when it wears down, it causes a crash to your focus when in class or when doing anything involving movement. Even students on a healthy course are unaware that they are consuming excess sugar since sugar can be found in things like bread, different sauces, salad dressing, and many other things we consume within our bodies. So instead of just randomly picking things because you think it has less sugar, if a food is presented to you, read the labels and look at all the nutritional facts.

Colorful Plates for Optimal Nutrition

The third is to aim for a variety of different options. Going to the cafe or dining hall can confuse your taste buds, seeing many different choices and not knowing what to pick, and you end up choosing many uneven or unhealthy choices. Let’s try to break your plate down for you so you’re not choosing just a bunch of different things randomly. Making a plate look colorful may seem childish, but having too much of one color on your plate, such as too much brown,, could mean you have too much protein on your plate. You must aim to separate your plate, aiming for making half of your plate fruits and or veggies and adding a source of protein and whole grains to wrap your plate up is ideal. This is the ideal way to dine when at college or even out with family or friends.

Staying Hydrated

The fourth thing everyone should know when on a college campus is to hydrate. Your body needs to get a great supply of water so that you won’t get dehydrated from walking around too much, especially during summer when it’s hot, and the sun is beaming down on you. Since our bodies are made of about 70% water, we must keep up with water intake within our bodies. Stay away from things like sodas, juices, or even milk. These things become detrimental to your body if you’re drinking them daily. Though most people get tired of drinking water, it’s healthy for your body. But, there are plenty of other options, such as bubbly water, small amounts of fruit in your water, or just making juice from actual fruit without any added chemicals is amazing for your body.

Empowering Yourself

To end my statement, my final tip for every college student who may be struggling with eating healthy is to use the resources around you, such as Google or even influencers/ content creators, to teach you how to balance your food choices. Don’t sit and wait around. Get up and make changes for yourself today so that you can have a healthy body.
