Cancer sucks, everyone knows it. The treatment methods for when a woman who has breast cancer often results in many changes, two of which can greatly affect self-esteem – hair loss and changes to your breasts due to mastectomy. 

Boobs.

Sometimes this is the defining part of a woman’s body that is often sexualized by American society, yet is a part of our bodies that offers life to little ones.

There is so much that surrounds breasts, but what is not often talked about is when they are no longer there.

A mastectomy is often one of the forms of treatment for women when they receive the diagnosis of breast cancer. Whether it is a single or double, it is a major procedure that can grossly affect the way a woman views herself after.

Unfortunately, a lot of femininity is tied to how a woman’s body looks, but there’s so much more to being a woman than breasts. Being a woman is a superpower and a strength, no matter what your body looks like.

A lot of women feel defeated and hurt after this procedure, but there are ways to love yourself after it. 

Breast Reconstruction

This type of plastic surgery procedure can help women who really want the look and feel of their breasts back, may want to undergo breast reconstruction surgery.

This will involve a plastic surgeon recreating the breast in the way you want. 

Trying Something New

This is a time to transform yourself, and maybe step out of your comfort zone.

Try that hairstyle you were always afraid to try, or maybe buy a new wardrobe you didn’t think you could pull off before. Loving Your Body After Breast Cancer 

Invest in some Lingerie

Lingerie isn’t just for people with perfect bodies, Rihanna showed us that!

Her models have a variety of bodies, some with and without modifications, and they all looked good! Try looking for brands that promote bodies that may not just be what is defined as “conventional.”

Stop Trying to Fit the Old

A lot of times women struggle with trying to fit into their old clothes and underwear, but unfortunately a lot of times it just isn’t the same.

It will take time and support, but learn to love the body that you’re in. Self-acceptance is the key to peace post-mastectomy.

These are just a couple of ways to love your body after a mastectomy. Remember to have support, lean on your community and talk to women who understand and can help you through this. You are beautiful, just as you are.
