Does The ‘Pull Out Method’ Work?

SHARE
African American man worried frustrated

That glow right before ejaculation is real, and it gets increasingly harder to pull out as you near climax. Brothers make a lot of real decisions in that three seconds of glory. The questions, the hard truths and the regrets we may or may not be able to live with are answered quickly as we decide whether or not to withdraw or ‘pull out.’

For instance….

“I like you and probably love you. But I got this thing called bills, a few more trips to book on my frequent flyer miles , we only been together for six months and I’m not ready and I think it’s best my sperm lands on your 800 thread count sheets.”

The withdrawal method, also known scientifically as coitus interruptus, is one of the world’s oldest forms of birth control. Millions of couples practice it. Actually, around 35 million couples practice ‘pulling out’ according to Planned Parenthood. There’s a lot of misinformation when it comes to pulling out. Brothers will swear up and down that “it works,” “I’ve been doing it for years,” and on and on.

“The pull out method has one of the lowest rates of effectiveness,” Dr. TaMara Griffin, a sexologist, sex therapist, author and motivational speaker, tells BlackDoctor.org. She adds, “According to stats approximately 4 to 27 women out of 100 will become pregnant using this method.”

With more than 20 years speaking, writing and teaching about sexuality under her belt, Dr. Griffin sets the record straight on this highly debated topic, “Does the pull out method work or nah?”

How effective is the pull out method?

Dr. Griffin: It depends on the assurance and consistency of usage. The withdrawal method has such a high failure rate because it relies heavily on the male partner’s ability to be able to “pull out” at the height of ejaculation which can be extremely challenging, especially if he is lost in the moment or if he suffers from premature ejaculation. Another reason that this method has a high failure rate is because pre-cum, which has sperm in it, may be in the tip of the penis prior to ejaculation. But pregnancy isn’t the only thing that you have to be concerned with. The withdrawal method doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. That is an EPIC fail!

Do’s and Don’ts of the Pull-Out Method

Dr. Griffin: The key to increasing effectiveness of this method is understanding the difference between orgasm and ejaculation. Also, increasing the male’s ability to maintain muscle control is also important in using the pull out method.  Any position such as man-on-top, spooning, etc. that allows the man the ability to “pull out” quickly, will help to increase effectiveness. Finally, get in sync with your female partner’s menstrual cycle. Use a menstruation tracker to learn when she’s ovulating. Try only practicing the withdrawal method during those times when she is NOT ovulating. This will also help to reduce the chances of pregnancy. So, unless the male partner has great understanding and control, this method may not be the best option and you better have a secondary method that you’re using or else you’ll be one of four to 27.
