Question: Why is the COVID booster important and what is the lowest age that one can receive the booster?

Featured on BlackDoctor

Michael LeNoir: That booster is pretty important in order to protect you over the long haul from the COVID infection. You’re not considered fully vaccinated until you’re boosted. Obviously people are getting tired of getting vaccinations. But I do think this third vaccination or the second vaccination for Johnson and Johnson are available to those down to age 12.

Ellis Dean: The latest reports show that there is still a wide gap between the blue and red states in terms of people that are getting the vaccine and the boosters. And so there still is a gap in terms of health outcomes. So more deaths are occurring to people that are conservative leaning. Liberals tend to have a less chance of getting COVID because they’re vaccinated. So take that as it may. They should be nonpartisan on this. I’m gonna say that. I’m gonna keep saying that this should be a nonpartisan issue. This is a health issue. And when we’re trying to be healthy, we need to take advantage of all the tools and options available to us. The booster is important in combating COVID.

Question: What should we know about the COVID Vaccine for our children?

Dr. Donna Carey: Number one, you need to know about the vaccines for the six month olds to four year olds. Now you probably heard in the news that they were coming soon and February 15th was supposed to be the day that it was going to be voted on by the FDA. Well, the drug company decided that they wanted to postpone it and delay that vote. And the reason is because they actually had studied a two dose regimen of the vaccine. And in those studies they realized maybe two doses isn’t really enough. Maybe we should start out with three doses versus how we’re doing now, where we started with two doses. And then five to six months later, we got a booster. They were thinking, well, maybe we should just start out with that three dose regimen in our younger children. Now they wanna make sure that which regimen is the right regimen. And to make sure that it is safe, if they decide to do that three dose regimen from the beginning. So more to come, but you do need to know that it is coming. As you may already know, we do have vaccines available for ages five and up right. Boosters are available for anyone aged 12 and above.

Question:  What more can you share about Long COVID?

Dr. Donna Carey: If you get coronavirus, you might have a mild case and you recover, but we know that there is long COVID. We’ve talked about long COVID and those symptoms that continue on past the time that you recover from the actual acute illness. We know that coronavirus increases the risk of developing diabetes. So you’ve recovered from COVID, but now you’re a diabetic. And we’re also seeing that in our children. What about problems with the nervous system? We’re seeing people who recover from coronavirus and they have what’s called brain fog. They are confused, they can’t quite think straight as much. Their memory is gone. That’s brain fog. A number of people after getting over the virus are developing dizziness and continued headaches and being tired months after they’ve recovered from coronavirus. We’re also seeing folks with kidney damage and people with heart problems. One study showed that more than 60% of people who recovered from coronavirus had swelling and inflammation of their hearts. Long COVID includes chronic illness, chronic disease, and multiple medical issues.
