6 Reasons Your Workout Routine Isn’t Working Out

Who doesn’t wanna shed fat, tighten up, and look their best?

But for many of us, sometimes it seems like no matter what we do, it just… ain’t… working

But why? Well, turns out, working out like a banshee alone isn’t going to cut it. In fact, in some cases, working out too much will have the opposite effect. There are several reasons for this. You might not be recovering, for one. Two, you might not be hitting the right workouts. Three, you might be working out well, but your diet is poor.

So let’s get into it.

Here are six reasons your workout routine isn’t working out, and what you can do to change it!

1. Overtraining

You’ve probably heard the saying, “no pain, no gain,” and while that certainly has some merit to it, getting in shape isn’t about killing yourself. See, when you overtrain you’re basically pushing too far, making recovery difficult or impossible.

And the science backs this up, showing higher levels of the stress hormone, cortisol, in people who constantly overtrain.

So here’s what to do. First, make sure to have full rest days. At least one or two every week. And if you’re feeling really worn down, super sore, or lacking motivation, take some time to focus on something else.

You’ll be glad you did.

2. Lack of Intensity/Targeting

The other end of the spectrum is not working hard enough

See how you feel. Is your heart rate not getting that high during workouts? Do your muscles feel light and easy? Are you just making it up as you go, with no focus on particular aspects of fitness, or particular muscle groups?

This is where personal trainers, workout tutorials, and gym memberships can help.

Gradually increase the intensity of your workouts. More weights, more reps, harder runs/swims/walks – you name it.

And be sure to target various muscle groups, so you’re not building up one to the detriment of another! This is where injuries can occur.

3. No Consistency

Success in life is always about consistency. It’s about getting up, going after it, and not giving up because of struggles or failures. In one study from the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, consistency was found to be the main predictor of long-term results and lasting fitness.

So lock in! Establish a routine, whether it’s on your own several times per week, with a group in person, through a video, whatever. Just stay consistent, and be realistic. Set goals you can reach in the short term so that you can build toward those more meaningful, long-term goals.

No shame in celebrating those small victories as you climb the mountain!

4. Poor Form

This one is huge, and many people unfortunately don’t know they’re doing it.

While it can be tempting to just hurl up some weights, do some exercises, or push through a workout, form is everything. Not only are you not reaping the full benefits if your form is bad, but you’re also increasing the chances of injury.

If you don’t have a trainer, watch YouTube/TikTok videos from the top fitness influencers. We often want to lift heavier, go harder, and do more, but this isn’t always the best. In reality, fewer reps and fewer weights performed the right way are what make the difference.

5. Not Enough Varied Stimulus

If you keep doing the same thing, you’re going to run outta results. Eventually, your body will get ‘bored,’ and stop developing. Scientifically speaking, this is due to a lack of varied stimuli. After all, your body is smart and will adapt to the same ol’ routine.

So mix it up! Do different exercises, sets, reps, and keep challenging your body.

The best bet is to do things like cardiovascular exercise, mixed with weights, stretching, and just sports competitions. By combining all these different modalities, you optimize your body and can really obtain that all-around physique you want.

6. Bad Eating Habits

Finally, don’t forget about diet!

This one’s a no-brainer, but oftentimes people work out so hard and so long, they just wanna indulge a bit. While having a little ‘naughty’ eating here and there is fine, don’t overdo it.

Think of it this way: the best way to reward yourself for working out is to give your body what it needs!

After all, what’s the point of working out if you don’t want to see awesome results?

Get in your macros – proteins, fats, and carbs – and don’t forget fruits and veggies. A nutritionist can help, but if you’re doing it on your own, just be sure to have balance and variety.

By minding these six aspects of your workout routine, you’ll be looking great and feeling great before you know it!
