Asthma vs Allergic Asthma: Do You Know The Difference?

Did you know there are different types of asthma? Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma and affects more than half of all asthmatics. To avoid having an episode, it’s important to get a proper diagnosis and learn your asthma triggers for this specific type of asthma.

 What Is Allergic Asthma?

Allergic asthma is triggered by inhaling allergens. Allergens are things in the environment like mold, pollen, pet dander and dust mites that, on their own, are usually harmless. However, for someone with an allergy they can set off a chain reaction in the immune system, causing the airways in the lungs to tighten and become inflamed.

Testing For Allergic Asthma

It’s best to see an asthma specialist, such as an allergist or immunologist, to identify your specific allergic triggers. The doctor will perform a series of skin tests to find out which allergens cause a reaction. Common allergen triggers are:

  • Mold
  • Pollen from grass and trees
  • Pet dander
  • Cockroaches
  • Dust mites

Minimizing Your Triggers

Knowing your triggers and learning how to avoid them is key. Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Keep pets off of furniture and out of your bedroom
  • Use allergy-proof coverings on pillows and mattresses
  • Wear a hat when going outdoors to help block pollen
  • Remove wall-to-wall carpeting in your home
  • Purchase a dehumidifier for your home to minimize mold

Treating Allergic Asthma

In addition to avoiding and minimizing your triggers, anti-inflammatory medications can help reduce swelling and can be used for long-term asthma control. Allergy shots can also help to keep your immune system from reacting severely to certain allergens.
