110-Year-Old Says Secret To Long Life Is 3 Beers A Day…And A Shot Of Whiskey

agnes

Agnes Fenton is 110-years-old as of Aug. 1st. Being born in 1905 and still living–that’s a great accomplishment, right?  Something that many of look forward too. And with that long life, the majority of us think that she had to have some special diet or exercise regime. However, she doesn’t view her astonishing longevity as a big deal.

“The birthday is just another day,” she said of the superspecial day, now come and gone, that ushered her into the “supercentenarian” club, North Jersey Media Group reports.

According to Agnes, it doesn’t take much to keep her going.

In an interview with ABC News five years ago, Agnes, who has no children, explained that the only serious health problem she had was a benign tumor that developed in her early 30s. But when she said that she drank three beers–Miller High Lifes to be exact–and a shot of whiskey, the doctor had nothing to say. It’s something she had been enjoying daily for decades. So when the doctor discharged her, he told her she “‘must drink three Miller High Lifes a day'”.

And there’s some truth to that. Researchers have found that even though wine usually gets all the credit as the booze that helps cut back your cardiovascular disease risk, beer actually can be just as heart-healthy of a beverage. Italian researchers found that moderate beer drinkers had a 42 percent lower risk of heart disease compared to non-drinkers. For maximum protection, keep your consumption to one pint—at around 5 percent alcohol by volume—a day.

Agnes’ physician Dr. Kenneth Wasserman has been seeing her for nearly 20 years, yet he can’t quite wrap his head around her longevity.

“The few things she’s had wrong with her have disappeared in ways they should not have. Her health has been…

… phenomenal. … She’s completely, thoroughly amazing,” Doctor  Wasserman said, without going into much detail. Fenton still has good eyesight and hearing and often reads and listens to the news.

“When I was 100 years old, I went to the mirror to thank God that I was still here. And I thank him every morning,” Fenton said, according to the news site. “He gave me a long life and a good life, and I have nothing to complain about. … You’ve got to have God in your life. Without God, you’ve got nothing.”

The supercentenarian has become somewhat of a local celebrity in Englewood, receiving birthday wishes from both President Obama and Governor Christie. The city even proclaimed her birthday ‘Agnes Fenton Day’ 10 years ago.
