Sanaa Joins The #NoMakeup, No Weave Movement

It seems as though there is another high profile star who’s joining in on Alicia Keys “No Makeup” movement. Actress Sanaa Lathan proclaimed that for the rest of the summer (or “summer 16” as the kids call it) will be makeup free. The busy 44-year-old actress already personifies the old adage, “black don’t crack” while working hard in Hollywood, and shared her #nomakeup selfies on instagram (see photo above).

The “Perfect Guy” beauty is taking the no makeup trend farther by also saying no to weaves for the rest of the summer. In her instagram gif she shares, “Summer ’16 is Au Natural. No makeup. No weaves. (fist emoji).”

Many other actresses have to put their hair on the back burner for the demanding schedules and roles they play in TV and the movies. And who could blame them? With demanding schedules for hair and makeup day in and day out, you need to give both your pores and your hair a break.

But there is push back from both sides. Some women are all gung-ho when it comes to going “au natural” saying things like “you go girl” and “you’re beautiful without it sista!” While other women are commenting saying things like “she think she all that” and “what’s wrong with makeup?”

Last month, Grammy Award-winning singer Alicia Keys shunned the intense pressures placed on women in the public eye, and women in general, by choosing to stop wearing make-up.

Penning an essay for Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner’s feminist newsletter, Lenny, the Fallin’ singer discusses her decision, a choice she credits as being one of the most empowering ones she’s made.

“One of the many things I was tired of was the constant judgement of women,” she writes.

Keys explained not wearing make-up was a big insecurity for her and she was constantly fearful of being judged should she be seen without makeup on.

“Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on make-up: ‘What if someone wanted a picture? What if they POSTED it?,” she wrote.

“These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me.”

Since her powerful decision, Keys has been spotted on several occasions wearing no make up and posed for magazines including Vanity Fair and Fault proving the feeling of empowerment lasted.
