By now, we all have realized that many challenges we see online can be pretty funny, fun, or sometimes even sad. Still, many challenges on social media are plain dangerous and stupid to attempt. Unfortunately, that doesn’t stop us from doing them for that moment of fame, right? If the answer is no, let’s talk about the most recent rising challenge on TikTok, the penny challenge.
What is it, you may be asking? Well, let me explain. The penny challenge involves having any plug sticking halfway into a socket with the prongs showing in sticking a penny between the prongs to create a spark. Now, you would look at this trend and probably ask yourself, “What person in their right mind would want to risk their life to do a trend?” Well, there are plenty of incidents that involve this challenge.
There was a case in Massachusetts at Westford Academy that showed a student attempting this challenge, and it led to everyone having to evacuate the school, which caused a spark and fire within the school. Although this happened and no one in the school got injured, the boy was soon charged with arson, having to pay off the damages that were made. Though the students say this was only an innocent prank, which may seem innocuous, the coin can strike the metal prongs, causing sparks and electrical and system damage. To prevent things like this from happening in schools, many officers and firefighters encourage kids to stop following the trends by giving them tips on why this trend can be very dangerous. This can cause old circuit breakers to fail, and the wires in the wall will heat up to the point of setting your house on fire.
