Following a medical emergency during a Sunday sermon that was live-streamed, Pastor T.D. Jakes remains “stable” under medical care after people rushed the stage in response to his health incident.
The Potter’s House, a Dallas megachurch where Jakes serves as pastor, released a statement Sunday night, assuring that Jakes was in stable condition and thanking people for their prayers.
The details of the medical condition responsible for his health incident are unclear.
“During today’s service, Bishop T.D. Jakes experienced a slight health incident and received immediate medical attention following his powerful hour-long message,” the church said in a message posted on social media.
“Bishop Jakes is stable and under the care of medical professionals. The entire Potter’s House family is grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from the community. Thank you for your understanding and continued prayers.”
Jakes, 67, was seen shaking in a live video that went viral moments after he delivered a powerful message. Numerous people shared clips of the incident on social media, along with their prayers and concerns.
In the video, Jakes was telling a story about visiting someone in the hospital who ended up encouraging the visitor. He then began to tell the audience he loved them before he suddenly stopped speaking. His head slightly faced down while his hands fell to his sides, and he began to shake.
It appeared as if he knew something was wrong. Several people from backstage rushed to his aid before the livestream cut off.
Bishop Jakes’ daughter, Sarah Jakes Roberts, and her husband, Touré Roberts, said in a video posted to Instagram late Sunday that Jakes was “already beginning to improve.”
“Obviously today could have been a tragic day but it wasn’t by the mercy of God,” Touré Roberts said. “By the grace of God, Bishop is doing well, he’s recovering well, he’s under medical care, he’s strong. We’re trying to get him to sit down. He’s the strong Bishop that we know, but we really can’t thank you enough for your prayers.”
Sarah Jakes Roberts added: “It’s a reminder that even going into this holiday season, we need to love on the people who you hold near and dear and just take the time to be grateful for all the people God’s given you.”
Meanwhile, the Potter’s House was founded in 1996 by Jakes, and has more than 30,000 members. Jakes wears many hats, including that of a renowned speaker, counselor to presidents, movie producer, best-selling author, father, and husband.
As previously reported by BDO, Jakes has been married to his wife, Serita, since 1982. Shortly after their wedding, Bishop Jakes and Serita survived a horrific car crash that left Serita with severe leg and foot injuries. It was uncertain if she would ever be able to walk again, but Bishop Jakes was by her side throughout her recovery process.
The two are still together, traveling the country, sharing the Gospel, and serving communities through various humanitarian projects. Serita made a full recovery, which the couple believes strengthened their relationship.
“I prayed for her, I took care of her, I cooked for her, I washed her hair, I taught her how to walk — literally,” Bishop told the Huffington Post. “[I] stood in front of her and said, ‘You can do this,’ and taught her to walk again.”
