(BlackDoctor.org) — A vaccine tested on monkeys may lead to one against HIV in humans, Oregon Health & Sciences University announced Wednesday.
The findings were published online in the science journal Nature.
The research team was led by Dr. Louis Picker, associated director of the school’s Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute. The effort also included the National Cancer Institute-Frederick and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative.
The vaccine was tested on rhesus macaque monkeys at the Oregon National Primate Research Center, using a form the virus called Simian Immunodeficiency Virus.
In about half the monkeys getting the vaccine, sensitive testing could no longer detect SIV.
The next step is to test the vaccine in human clinical trials.
