Joe Jackson: Stroke Facts Blacks Need To Know

Joe Jackson, the Jackson family patriarch, recently suffered a stroke, and is being treated in a Las Vegas hospital, a source close to the Jackson family said.

Jackson, 83,”is in very good spirits” and expects to be sent home from the hospital Friday, said the source, who asked not to be identified.

The “mild” stroke is similar to two others he suffered in the past five years, another source close to Jackson said.

Joe Jackson created and managed the Jackson 5, the legendary R&B and pop group made up of his sons, including Michael Jackson.

Although he is still married to Jackson matriarch Katherine Jackson, they live separately. He has a home in Las Vegas, while his wife lives in Calabasas, California, with Michael Jackson’s three children.

Despite his age, Jackson remains active in developing and promoting several businesses and products.

Stroke Facts You Need To Know

What is a stroke? A stroke is sometimes called a “brain attack.” Most often, stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain stops because it is blocked by a clot. When this happens, the brain cells in the immediate area begin to die.

Why are strokes so deadly? Some brain cells die because they stop getting the oxygen and nutrients they need to function. Other brain cells die because they are damaged by sudden bleeding into or around the brain. The brain cells that don’t die immediately remain at risk for death. These cells can linger in a compromised or weakened state for several hours.

What do Blacks need to be more aware of their stroke risks? Stoke is identified as being 67% higher in African American men than other ethnic groups and 88% of blacks are more likely to die from a stroke than whites.
