Whenever the seasons change, it always poses the perfect chance to reflect on your current health habits. Have you been getting enough sleep? Have you hit the gym as often as you liked? Whether you’re nodding yes with excitement or feeling dreadful because your routines stopped, don’t beat yourself up. It’s okay, sis. Every day is a new day and a great time to reset and cultivate healthy new habits to support your body, mind, and spirit.
With the new season approaching, we’re going to share some tips to help you elevate your autumn health goals. So before you start sipping on that creamy PSL from Starbucks or binging “Girlfriends” on a cozy Friday night with a bottle of wine and friends (which we get), let’s take a look at some effortless ways to prioritize your wellness this fall.
Regular activity not only helps you stay healthy, but also improves your quality of life. Exercise naturally encourages you to get outside more; it boosts your mood and helps maintain emotional balance, according to the American Heart Association.
Regular exercise can also help you fall asleep faster, sleep more deeply, and sleep more soundly. And with shorter days around the corner, exercise might help your body acclimate to earlier nights. Morning exercise, in particular, positively impacts circadian rhythms and helps the body adjust to new time patterns, Scientific American points out.
Consider starting the morning off with a low-intensity yoga sequence or try a new lift on leg day, like reverse lunges to target the hamstrings and glutes.
Crisp weather. Cozy vibes. Early nights. Autumn gives us a chance to discover indoor activities that bring us joy.
When the temperature drops, consider finding alternatives to your beloved summer activities. For instance, if you enjoy playing beach volleyball, try indoor volleyball instead. On rainy days, visiting a local museum or checking out a science center can help you learn about history, science, and art in a visually engaging atmosphere.
Some other popular indoor activities include: hosting a game night, leisurely strolling around the mall, and trying out a new fall-inspired recipe using ginger, a peppery superfood spice that will warm you up on cooler nights.

Embracing autumn-inspired activities can be an effortless way to elevate your wellness routine since many activities encourage you to get outside more.
At the top of the list is, you guessed it, a visit to the pumpkin patch. Whether you’re planning a trip with family, friends, or a partner, this can be a memorable way to foster connection and intimacy.
Apple picking is another popular activity. Strolling through the orchard and picking apples is a fun way to get outdoors and stay active. Plus, you get to enjoy your handpicked apples, which support overall health thanks to their low-calorie, high-fiber, nutrient-rich content.
For more fall activities, consider signing up for a 5K or half marathon with community-supporting organizations like Black Girls Run.

While pumpkins and apples are beloved fall favorites, there are more seasonal foods worth adding to your next grocery haul.
Sweet potatoes are nutrient-rich and packed with vitamins that enhance eye health, boost immunity, and support gut health. Kale and cabbage are praised for their high fiber and antioxidant content.

Shorter fall days mean less sunshine, and sunlight plays a huge role in the quality of your sleep. So if you’re falling into irregular sleep patterns because of autumn, you’re not alone
Luckily, there are simple ways to prioritize healthy sleep habits.
The first step is to make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep. The CDC recommends that adults get at least seven hours per night, while children get at least nine hours per night.
The second step is to prioritize sleep quality (aka uninterrupted and rejuvenating sleep). Having a consistent sleep schedule, staying active, and avoiding big meals and limiting screen time before bed can support sleep quality.
Seasonal changes can impact our emotional well-being. While it’s normal to have an off day, self-care routines make it easier to navigate mood shifts, especially as seasons change.
For social self-care, consider cooking an autumn-inspired meal for family and friends, then inviting them over. Or attend a local fall festival for even more social connection.
Yoga, meditation, or daily stretching can foster the mind-body connection.
On the other hand, journaling, reading books, and reciting daily affirmations can be a powerful tool for supporting mental wellness.
If you’re looking for deeper one-on-one support to help you navigate bigger questions or trauma, therapy can be a great resource. Therapy for Black Girls is dedicated to providing safe spaces for Black women and girls, while Black Emotional and Mental Health Collective (BEAM) is a larger directory with all types of wellness professionals–therapists, doulas, acupuncture, and more.
Gratitude practices have become popular in the last couple of years and for good reason. They coat the brain in positivity and help shift a person’s focus from the future or past to the present moment.
One way to practice gratitude is to tell someone what you’re grateful for and be as specific as possible. For instance, if someone invited you to a party, you could say, “I really enjoyed meeting your friends and bonding over Uno. Thank you so much for inviting me!”
Another option is to write this moment in a journal and spend time feeling this uplifting emotion.
If you’re looking to spruce up your wellness routine this fall, each of the tips listed above is an excellent way to start. No matter where you’re starting from, it’s important to applaud yourself for making time to support your health.
And if you’re already following many of these, consider challenging yourself more in one area. For instance, if you’re already exercising daily, try an outdoor workout the next time.
