If you need therapy but cannot afford it, you are not alone. Actually, you’re accompanied by millions.

A recent study found that nearly 10 percent of Black Americans are uninsured. And with monthly therapy costs ranging from $120 to $1200, it’s no surprise people are turning to a more affordable solution: AI Therapy.

Benefits like 24/7 availability, affordability, and anonymity have helped AI Therapy gain popularity. But before you turn an AI tool into a trusted counselor, check out our suggestions for safer therapy solutions that won’t break the bank!

The Affordability Barrier

The simple truth is: therapy can feel like a luxury when you’re barely making ends meet.

With Black women facing an unemployment crisis in America, the affordability barrier is more palpable than ever. But, even before unemployment rates soared to 7.3 percent in 2025, systemic disparities, higher uninsured rates, and lower income levels made affording therapy impossible for millions of Black Americans.

Therapeutic services are no match for poverty. That means, if you fall on hard financial times, therapy might be the first kind of care you lose.

Given this context, it’s understandable why so many people are turning to AI for empty, canned responses disguised as empathetic relief.

What is AI Therapy?

AI Therapy typically uses chatbots to deliver on-demand mental health services via automated conversations and therapy exercises.

Chatbots are programmed to engage users in conversations that mimic human interaction. These AI-driven tools can deliver on-demand mental health services through various methods, including:

Automated Conversations

Chatbots can engage users in dialogue, providing a safe space for them to express their thoughts and feelings. Through natural language processing (NLP), these bots understand user input and respond, creating a conversational flow that resembles human interaction.

Therapeutic Exercises

Many AI therapy chatbots incorporate evidence-based therapeutic exercises, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques. These exercises may include guided journaling, mindfulness practices, and cognitive restructuring to help users manage their emotions and thoughts effectively.

24/7 Availability

Unlike traditional therapy, which often requires scheduling appointments, chatbots are available around the clock. This immediate access allows users to seek help whenever they need it, whether in a crisis or simply to talk.

Anonymity and Privacy

For many Black Americans, the stigma associated with seeking mental health support can be a significant barrier. Chatbots offer a level of anonymity that can encourage users to open up about their struggles without fear of judgment.

The Potential Risks of AI Therapy

While the promise of around-the-clock, affordable therapy through AI solutions is appealing, Stanford’s study findings raise significant concerns about the efficacy and safety of therapy chatbots.

The study highlighted that these digital tools may inadvertently stigmatize certain mental health conditions, such as alcoholism and schizophrenia, and even encourage suicidal ideation in users.

These findings are particularly alarming for our community. Because Black Americans face rapidly increasing suicide rates, we may be more at risk for harm.

Here are two factors to consider:

  1. Increased Vulnerability: Factors such as systemic racism, economic disparities, and social inequities contribute to higher levels of stress and mental health challenges among Black Americans. When AI therapy tools fail to provide appropriate support or, worse, exacerbate suicidal thoughts, they can pose a serious risk to the most vulnerable people in the Black community.
  1. Need for Human Connection: The human connection is important in mental health support. AI therapy chatbots may lack the empathy and understanding that a trained therapist can provide. For Black Americans, who often seek culturally sensitive care, the absence of human interaction can be detrimental, especially during times of crisis.

While the future of AI Therapy is promising yet nuanced, you deserve empathetic, safe, and affordable therapy today

Cost-Effective Alternatives to AI Therapy

Sliding-Scale Therapy is a flexible payment structure where therapists adjust their session fees based on a client’s income and ability to pay. This alternative may be great for:

  • Individuals with low incomes
  • Individuals experiencing a financial hardship
  • Individuals seeking in-network alternatives

How to Access Care:

  • Ask therapists directly if they offer a “sliding scale” fee during the initial consultation.
  • Be prepared to share proof of income, such as pay stubs or tax returns.

Group Therapy is a form of psychotherapy where one or more licensed therapists treat a small group of clients (typically five to 15 people) simultaneously. This alternative may be ideal for:

  • Individuals struggling with feelings of isolation
  • Individuals with substance abuse disorders
  • Individuals seeking a cost-effective alternative to traditional therapy

How to Access Care:

  • Online Directories: Use websites such as Psychology Today, American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA), or TherapyDen to filter groups by location and topic.
  • Community Mental Health Centers: Contact local health departments or mental health organizations, such as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), for available peer-led or professional-led groups.

Nonprofit Therapy Networks are organizations or collectives, often holding 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, that provide mental health services with a mission centered on community benefit, accessibility, and affordability rather than profit maximization. This alternative may be a good fit for:

  • Individuals with limited financial resources
  • Individuals needing community-specific care (i.e., LGBTQ+ support)
  • Individuals seeking specialized care for specific issues, such as depression, anxiety, trauma, abuse, and eating disorders.

How to Access Care:

  • Register on a specialized platform, such as Open Path Collective
  • Pay a registration fee to access their directory
  • Filter the directory by location, therapy modality, or income need

No matter which alternative to AI Therapy is the right fit, remember that you don’t have to choose between affordability and efficacy.
