How To

Step 1: Section hair into squares or triangles using fingers or comb. The smaller the section, the curlier the hair will be.

Step 2: Apply curling cream, pomade, butter or whatever setting product you choose (Avoid being too generous with product, but make sure to apply evenly).

Step 3: Detangle hair.

Step 4: Once you have your hair sectioned off the way you want it, twirl the hair and then roll it around itself.

Step 5: Use a bobby pin to secure.

Step 6: Let hair sit for several hours, preferably overnight.

Step 7: Gently unravel the knots the next morning.

Step 8: Separate coils to your desired liking.

Step 9: Use your fingers or a pick to lift roots and fluff out hair, giving it volume.

Tips

  • Starting with moisturized and detangled hair will make it more manageable and more likely to produce desirable results. Dry, rough hair will achieve a not so finished look.
  • Using moisturizing products that have a light hold and evenly distributing it through your hair is key. Butter and pomades are best for this, as they moisturize and smooth the hair preventing frizz while giving your hair some added hold.
  • Section your hair according to how you plan to style it. This is so important, as parting can make or break your final look. Map out how you want the results to be then knot and part accordingly. Honeycomb-like parts are easier to hide than straight or triangular ones.
  • Don’t over twist. This will not produce better results, and it is bad for your hair. It can put too much stress on your strands, making them potentially fall out. The key is keeping the twist smooth and uniform.
  • Unscrew the knots with care. If this is not done properly, you will end up with a frizzy mess.
  • Maintain your look at night by either re-twisting or pulling hair into the pineapple method.

Styling Options

Tightly curled. If you don’t mind this youthful look, it’s a great way to rock your freshly unraveled knots. The curls will begin to drop naturally on their own throughout the day!

On Day 2 the curls will have dropped more and you can pin up the sides for a more sophisticated look!

For a more professional look, you can pin up in the back and let the curls fall in your face.

And for a sexy date night look, pull the curls up into a puff and let the loosened curls fall as they would naturally. This gives a bit of a messy yet fun look!
