“We Need to Talk”: The HIV Conversation Black People Need to Have

Recent statistics show that Black Americans are more likely to be diagnosed with HIV while still having the lowest rates of ethnicities that access pre-exposure prophylaxis care (PrEP). While the reasons for higher rates of developing HIV and low access to PrEP can vary, one thing is clear: doctors want Black people to know more about preventing HIV infections. Interestingly, though Black men are more prone to being diagnosed with the illness, doctors say that it’s the women who access PrEP care less than their male counterparts. In any case, all Black Americans need to take better care of themselves when it comes to HIV prevention. Regardless of how you choose to protect yourself, knowing your options is the first place to start.

Listen to Dr. Cassandra Esperant discuss when is a good time to have that conversation with your doctor and what you need to talk about.
