An important part of treating breast cancer is determining the types of treatment that may be effective. For many women, that means undergoing hormone therapy before or after exploring surgical intervention. Hormone therapy is designed to specifically address the form of breast cancer that is receptive to the hormones that encourage the growth of cancer cells. If used before surgery, it can help to reduce the size, rate and growth of cancer cells. When used after surgery, you reduce the risk of your cancer returning because the environment is no longer conducive to the growth of abnormal cells. However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Black women, in particular, are more prone than other ethnicities to have their breast cancer return in a more aggressive form and if that happens, you need to know what to do.
