Keisha Knight Pulliam: All Grown Up & Giving Back

Keisha Knight Pulliam is best known for her role on the long-running “Cosby Show” as Rudy Huxtable. The adorable Keisha is now a mid-thirties actress, entertainer and entrepreneur. She dishes on how she handles it all and keeps it all healthy.

Healthy Body & Hair
Keisha practices a low maintenance regiment and daily vitamin supplements, but this star says an overall healthy lifestyle, especially a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, keeps her hair growing long and strong. “My Vitamix [blender] is my favorite thing, ever. I love making smoothies at home. It really, really matters,” she says.

Because she exercises so often, Pulliam stays consistent with her hair washing routine. “My scalp is naturally very oily, so for my hair to be fresh and fluffy, I have to wash my hair about every four days,” she says. The starlet says she switches it up between shampoo brands like Joico and Pantene, always making sure to deep condition.

When she’s working out, Pulliam relies on heat-free styles like a chic side braid to get her through. “Tuesdays and Thursdays are my workout days. That way, if I want to enjoy my weekends, I can get my hair done on Thursday and it will be fresh for the weekend.”

Healthy Mind
“Honestly, at the end of the day, it starts from the inside so you need consistency,” admit Pulliam. “You cannot expect miracles overnight; it’s important to commit and give things time. As black women, we are not homogeneous, so you must create a routine based on your individual needs. There are so many vitamins and health products out there but you have to think about your body’s chemistry. Go to a really good nutritionist or find natural remedies to help maintain your health.”

Healthy Community
The former childhood star also loves to give back.  One of the way she does that is through her camp for young girls, Kamp Kizzy. It’s a non-profit for 11-16 year old girls. “We focus on empowerment and self esteem,” beams Pulliam. “It is important for girls to dream big and accomplish big — understanding there is nothing outside of their reach. We host programs throughout the year, but in the summer we host usually 100 girls for free. This past summer we had 105 girls join us. They come from all across the country to Atlanta. We have different workshops based on vision boards, sexual and reproductive health, yoga and respect. We create a very safe place and judgement-free zone for the girls. Kamp Kizzy is based on who I am as a woman; I realize not everyone will have the same experiences as me. Kamp Kizzy is about broadening another person’s horizon.”
