Stay Confident and Fresh: Top 5 Tips for HS Management

Table of Contents
HS management

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic skin condition, is more than painful, unsightly lumps, abscesses, and lesions. It is also a biased condition.

That’s to say, Black individuals are up to 3.5 times more likely than white folks to get diagnosed with HS. They’re also more likely to suffer severe complications, like scarring. Beyond its uncomfortable discharges and lesions, however, HS also greatly impacts self-esteem.

Especially the odor.

Fortunately, there are effective strategies to combat that sometimes unbearable stench.

Wanna stay smelling fresh? Here are five practical ways to manage those darn HS odors.

1. Keep It Clean!

Call it regular cleansing, call it staying fresh, whatever you do, you gotta ensure the bacteria and sweat are getting cleaned up. Gentle, consistent washing is the best way to eliminate odor while reducing the risk of infections that can exacerbate your HS symptoms.

Not sure how to do it?

It’s simple. First, start with a relatively mild and fragrance-neutral soap so that sensitive skin isn’t bothered. Don’t use harsh cleansers, as they can mess up your natural oil levels. When cleaning, use gentle strokes and don’t scrub – that can worsen lesions. Finally, do it daily, especially after exercise.

When done, pat the area dry with a clean towel. Opt for antiseptic dermatologist-recommended washes.

2. Freshen Up With Aluminum Chloride

Aluminum chloride-based deodorants are great for cutting back on sweat. This can lower moisture and keep your odor to a minimum. Just make sure you always apply to skin that is totally dry. Don’t go too heavy, as this can clog your pores, making problems worse. And, for a little hack, apply at night so that it can work when your sweat glands aren’t as active.

The best deodorants are clinical strength, designed for excessive sweating. Ask your doctor what’s best for you.

3. Remember to BREATHE

Breathing is pretty important, but so is wearing clothing that breathes. Breathable clothing works by reducing sweating and irritation, making your skin way more comfortable overall. This, in turn, weakens any nasty odors.

When it comes to breathable clothing, your best bet is natural fabric. This could be anything from cotton to linen or moisture-wicking fabrics. It’s also a good idea to wear loose-fitting garments that prevent friction and cut down on irritation.

Whatever you do, remember to switch up your clothes regularly, definitely after physical activity.

4. Hygiene Is King

This is common sense, but sometimes we get caught up in life and forget to take care of ourselves like we should. Not good! Maintaining cleanliness is one of the simplest things we can do to reduce unpleasant smells.

For some quick tips, remember to shower daily, pat your skin dry gently, and trim hair regularly in affected areas. Check with your dermatologist for creams that can help ease this process.

Talcum powder and cornstarch are great for keeping sensitive areas dry.

5. Go Pro-Antibacterial

Beating odors is all about defeating bacterial loads on your skin. Adopt a daily skincare routine. Apply cream directly to affected areas consistently, and be sure not to overuse it. It can be tempting to just load it up, but this actually defeats the purpose because it can seriously clog up your pores.

As always, check with your doc about products that are gentle but effective. Finding that perfect balance is key, and it’s different for everyone.

Starve the Stench

Overall, life with HS can be challenging, especially for Black sufferers who are prone to worse symptoms and more chronic complications. But it doesn’t have to be. If you’re embarrassed by odors, struggling to get your self-confidence back, feeling like you’d rather just isolate yourself than go out and about around people, you’re not alone. And you’re certainly not without solutions!

You’ve got options. Regular cleansing, aluminum chloride deodorants, wearing breathable clothing, practicing good hygiene, and using antibacterial creams are all top ways to manage your HS-related odors. By integrating these tips into your daily routine, you can drastically improve your comfort and, more importantly, your quality of life.

Remember, don’t shy away from your doc. It may be uncomfortable to bring up your unpleasant odors, but dermatologists know all about this. Consult with your healthcare provider and find the products or treatments most suitable for you

Before you know it, you’ll be smelling fresh, feeling good, and doing what you knew you could!
