Is Your Sex Life Giving You a Headache?

As a consenting adult wanting to explore a good time with another consenting adult (or multiple, no judgment here), it’s fine to have the urge and want to or actually act on it. Sex is a part of life, so indulging in it however you see fit without hurting others is your business. It’s fun, it’s exciting, it’s intimate, it’s passionate, and it’s whatever you want it to be even with some of the risk that comes with it. If you’re practicing safe sex, using a condom to prevent pregnancy and STDs/STIs, and being consensual, then, by all means, go forth and have all the fun you want, you’re an adult. But keep in mind that besides pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, there are other red flags about sex. It can become addicting, it might not be enjoyable every time you partake in it or it can cause you really bad headaches. Yes, sex can give you migraines.

Can Sex Cause A Chronic Migraine?

When it comes to having an active sex life, there are so many unknowns out there. In some cases, sexual activity can cause headaches or even migraines. This can happen often for some people, especially with orgasms. It starts with you noticing a simple ache in your head and or on your neck as you become sexually aroused.

As you get more excited, the aching in your head and neck will begin to build, which can then turn into a full-blown headache or migraine. This aching can also come right before or during an orgasm.

Sex Headaches And Should You Be Concerned

When it comes to sex headaches, as mentioned before, the good news is that they are rare. Many people do not experience them and to the ones that do, sex headaches typically last for a few hours or a few days (2-3 days).

Though anyone can experience a sex headache, people who are more at risk for this type of head pain are males and people who are prone to migraines.

Another good piece of news is that sex headaches aren’t really a cause for concern. People who get them will experience sex headaches in groups over the span of a few months and then not experience them again for a year or more.

Some people only experience a sex headache once in their lifetime, so thankfully you do not need to be worried about them unless you are experiencing them often for long periods of time when having sex.

What Causes A Sex Headache?

When it comes to the what, as in what causes sex headaches, any type of sexual activity that leads to orgasming can cause head pain. Whether it be the act itself or the build-up where your excitement levels are increasing.

Though in some instances, sudden headaches or even slow-paced build-up headaches can be the cause of underlying issues.

Taking birth control pills can cause sex headaches or even other types of medication. If you have an irregular connection between the arteries and veins in the brain, then this can lead to a headache or migraine as well. Inflammation from infections, stroke and even coronary artery disease can all be health conditions that sex headaches are associated with.

What To Do If You Experience These Often

If you experience sex headaches, then your symptoms will look like a dull ache in the neck and head area as your sexual excitement levels increase. Another symptom that can occur is an abrupt, severe throbbing ache that happens during or right before an orgasm.

For some people, they will experience both at the same time. They usually do not last long so if you’re experiencing one, try a cold compress on your head after and sit in silence just to get the throbbing to simmer.

In the event that you experience a sex headache, talk to a doctor about it especially if the first headache you experience (or the types of headaches you experience during sex) are sudden and severe.

For prevention, being the less dominant one during sex can help prevent sex headaches or stopping sexual activity altogether.

Your sex life is yours to have fun with and explore, just make sure it’s not hurting you in the process.
