Eight year old Zaraya Blunt is fighting for her life.

She was diagnosed with Luekemia in March 2016 and is about to go into her third round of treatment.

Leukemia is cancer of the body’s blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system.

Many types of leukemia exist. Many forms of leukemia are more common in children–In fact, leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children. Other forms of leukemia can occur in adults.

Leukemia usually involves the white blood cells. Your white blood cells are potent infection fighters — they normally grow and divide in an orderly way, as your body needs them. But in people with leukemia, the bone marrow produces abnormal white blood cells, which don’t function properly.

Treatment for leukemia can be complex — depending on the type of leukemia and other factors. In Zaraya’s case, her treatment method is chemotherapy.

Many of Zaraya’s symptoms started out as common like fever, feeling weak and tired, pain in bones or joints, bruising, and enlarged lymph nodes as a result of the overproduction of immature lymphocytes crowding the lymph system. But Zaraya’s progressed.

“After I take the medicine, I feel kind of sleepy,” says Zaraya to KCCI. “But then when I wake up, I just feel better.”

Even though Zaraya’s family is paying for medical bills, Zaraya wanted to pitch in and do her part. So what did she do? She did what most kids her age know how to do, and opened up a lemonade stand.

Between hospital visits, Zaraya and her grandmother devised a business plan (yes, the are serious).

“While sitting in the hospital, we got bored,” her grandmother said. “Plus, every time we ordered her food, she wanted…

…lemonade, so that’s where the idea started from. We then got creative and started selling it.”

“I’m just trying to stay positive for her,” Zaraya’s mother says proudly. “My daughter’s been through so much so how can you not be proud of her. She’s a fighter.”

Currently, Zaraya is still selling pink lemonade and her prognosis is looking good the family says.  Go ‘head Zaraya! We see you!
