travel

Hello, passport holders! As the weather heats up and days get longer, that urge to leave your country grows ever stronger. Whether it’s your first time venturing away from the US or if your friends don’t know where you are in the world at any given time, this is a great year to catch all the flights as the travel industry makes a major comeback.

While planning your next trip can be exciting, we have all experienced some form of discrimination while abroad. It’s the sad truth—maybe a taxi won’t pick you up, or you can’t seem to get into a bar or club as you watch others being welcomed to enter without a wait time. That’s why this year, we are prioritizing destinations that have been intentional about creating spaces for Black and Brown people. Fortunately, as we researched, the globe did not disappoint!

While popular spots like Tullum and Puerto Rico are filling up with the usual crowds this summer, dare to be different. We have scoured the world to uncover five destinations that will inspire and excite the most seasoned world travelers. Not only will you have an incredible travel experience, but you’ll also have the opportunity to connect with international Black communities who have created safe spaces for us.

Serbia, The Balkans

Serbia is like a hidden gem in the heart of the Balkans, bursting with bold flavors, lively beats, and warm hospitality that makes every visitor feel right at home. From ancient fortresses overlooking the Danube to charming villages with traditional music and hearty cuisine, Serbia offers an adventure for every kind of traveler. Sip on rakija (the local fruit brandy) with new friends, dance to folk tunes or modern beats, and explore stunning landscapes—from rolling vineyards to rugged mountains. Many travelers of color loved their welcoming, easy, and tension-free experience in the Balkans, especially for long-term visitors.

Dublin, Ireland

Get ready for more storybook charm! This city effortlessly blends old and cozy with a buzzing modern vibe — think cobblestone streets, colorful doors, and the friendly chatter of locals ready to share a good craic. Sip on a perfectly poured pint in a historic pub while traditional Irish tunes play in the background, or wander through museums and galleries that celebrate Ireland’s rich history and vibrant arts scene. Whether you’re exploring the legendary Trinity College library, catching street performers in Temple Bar, or just soaking up the cheerful buzz of Dublin’s neighborhoods, you’ll find yourself swept up in the warm spirit and endless stories that make this city so unforgettable.

Now it is Ireland, so you aren’t going to see many Black people, to be honest. That being said, you won’t be made to feel like you’re one of a few Black people. The genuine lack of hate is obvious, and everyone is made to feel like family no matter what they look like.
