More Black Women Are Locking Their Hair; Here’s Why You Should Too

Black women got the natural hair game on lock! (seriously) In recent years, there’s been a noticeable shift in the way we’ve embraced locs and started our own unique loc journeys.

We love to see it!

Beyond the influence of celebrities, there are practical and personal reasons why Black women have taken the loc’d route. For some, it’s about aesthetics. For others, it’s a spiritual connection to the higher self. You don’t need a reason to rock locs, but you should definitely know the amazing benefits of doing so.

Here’s why you should lock in and loc up.

We Got Time Today

One thing we can’t afford to waste is time, and having locs gives you plenty of it. Unlike traditional hairstyles that may require daily maintenance, locs require minimal day-to-day styling and less fuss in the morning (especially once they’ve reached maturity). This means fewer hours spent in front of the mirror—and don’t even get me started on wash day.

 *gets started anyway*

When I was a loose natural, I spent hoursss shampooing, conditioning, and detangling my hair. By the time it was time to style it, I wanted to throw the whole head away. Don’t get me wrong, the results were beautiful! But I don’t miss when wash day would last me the entire day.

With locs—wash, condition, and go. You can retwist every so often if you want a lil razzle-dazzle. (I have the sad audacity to be tender-headed so low manipulation required is a plus for me.)

Money Honey

Locs are amongst the most cost-efficient styles for Black women to rock; and as a proud student of YTU (YouTube University), let me just say that you can easily learn to maintain your own crown and save hundreds, and even more when you’re loc’d—no expensive products or styling tools necessary. If simplicity is your jam, you can maintain your locs with water and natural oils.

Even if you do prefer the salon experience, you’ll only need to visit every 6-12 weeks for upkeep (depending on your growth frequency and loc method). So, you’ll still come out spending less and saving more.

 A win is a win.

Switch It Up

Contrary to popular belief, locs offer incredible versatility! From braid-outs and free-flowing curls to twists and elegant updos, the loc’d community shows out! Your locs can also be adorned with accessories and colored to suit your personality, making them a canvas for self-expression, which brings me to my next point.

Confidence on 10

Like fingerprints, no set of locs are identical. They are uniquely yours, so not only will you stand out, but you’ll exude more confidence. Many Black women have reported feeling more in love with their natural appearance after making the switch to locs.

You’ll also enjoy the convenience of not having to duck and hide from the rain—locs love water!

Lose the Toxins, Keep the Length.

This one’s a fav. Loc’d hair promotes healthier care practices. Unlike chemical treatments that may damage the hair, locs are achieved through a natural process that allows the hair to flourish without harsh chemicals. This leads to stronger, thicker, and more resilient hair over time.

Ready to retain length? Come on inches!

Many Black women who have embraced locs have also embraced freedom and authenticity. They represent defying societal pressures to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards and emphasize the significance of their crown.

If you’re contemplating starting your loc journey, take the time to explore your options and connect with others who have embarked on a similar path. Join and follow loc’d communities, share your experiences, and be a part of the growing movement celebrating the beauty of locs.
